Nene Valley Harriers have picked up medals at the English Schools Championships in Gateshead.

Robbie Shaw of Bourne Academy won bronze in the senior boys shot putt for the second successive year, Spalding Grammar School student William Hughes was third in the junior boys 200m and Hannah Molyneaux struck gold in the junior girls shot putt.

Shaw’s best effort of 14.78m was a bit down on his best of 15m but he would have needed to have thrown well beyond that to have changed the colour of his medal.

Runner-up Jordan Davies from Somerset finished with 15.77m while champion Kai Jones from Middlesex threw 16.34m.

Molyneaux, who won the junior girls title last year when competing for Dorset, was this year representing Lincolnshire and she retained her crown with a throw of 13.71m – just 21cm off the championship best performance.

She went into the event ranked number one in the UK with a personal best of 14.15m and Eloise Locke of Kent was number two with 13.18m.

And that’s the way they finished with Locke taking the silver with 13.02m.

Molyneaux moved north just before Christmas to be closer to her coach Geoff Capes who lives in Holbeach. Molyneaux goes to school in Lincoln.

Hughes, also representing Lincolnshire, clocked 22.79 – just outside his PB of 22.51 – in a final won by Cameron Sprague of Avon in 22.40. Hughes’ twin brother Charles and big sister Lily were also in action for Lincolnshire.

Lily (Bourne Grammar) was fifth in the senior girls 100m final in 12.10 while Charles (Spalding Grammar) was ninth in the junior boys shot with 11.26m.

Emma Hornsby (Bourne Grammar and Nene Valley Harriers) was also ninth in the senior girls long jump with 5.28m.

But there was no joy for Jasmine Allen (Bourne Grammar and Nene Valley) in the junior girls long jump qualifying with 4.86m.
