Janet Farrington represented Burghley Park at Stanton-on-the-Wolds in the England Golf regional final for the best competition (medal and stableford) winners over four rounds from the 2021season.

This was Janet’s first competition at regional level and she rose well to the occasion by finishing 11th out of 75 entries from the regional clubs.

She had to overcome a nerve-wracking start involving a greenside bunker on the first hole and a couple of speedy chips across the par three second.

However, she soon got the hang of the fast putting greens and only missed a couple by a whisker resulting in a score of 35 stableford points, narrowly missing going through to the next round by one shot.

Janet was clearly in control of a course that got the better of most of the field, with scores going as low as 18 points.

She thanked her caddy, Sue Churchill, who helped her keep her head down and chin up with good advice and lots of encouragement. She also commented that Stanton Golf Club were most welcoming.

Medal-phobia and a few cases of Covid reduced the entry for the ladies’ Jubilee Cup on Sunday.

This trophy was first contested 45 years ago in 1977 - the Queen’s silver jubilee year - and was presented to the ladies’ section by Bridget Addy.

Only two players managed to achieve better than par scores for their medal round.

Michelle Powell, playing off 17, and Janet Duff (25) both finished with net 67s, well ahead of the rest of the field with nothing more than a six on either of their cards.

Michelle took the gross prize with a score of gross 84 after a very steady round containing eight pars.

She was also in the running for the net prize, but was pipped to the post on countback by Janet Duff. Newcomer Natalie Jones (29) took third place with a net 74.
