There was joy for Ketton Lions yesterday (August 31) as they sealed the Cambs Division Two title, but despair for Yaxley as their relegation from the same division was confirmed.

Ketton travelled to Eaton Socon requiring just a single point to confirm top spot, but they celebrated in style by beating their hosts by 86 runs.

Star man was professional all-rounder Ajaz Akhtar who top scored with 46 in Ketton’s modest total of 157 before making it 59 wickets for the season with a spell of 6-30. Captain Rob Vitas, the mastermind behind Ketton’s success, was at the crease when the title-clinching bonus point was achieved.

Sadly Yaxley’s relegation back to Hunts League cricket, which has appeared inevitable for some time, was settled by a nine-wicket loss at Abington. Only Pete Bradshaw (44) managed a reasonable score in a total of 134.

Newborough are not yet safe after slipping to a 46-run defeat at Khalsa. Kelsey Corder bagged 5-39 for Newborough, but Khalsa successfully defended a meagre total of 117 thanks to the skills of Shakaar Mahmood (6-20).

Ramsey maintained their 23-point lead at the top of Division One after despatching Camden by 93 runs at Cricketfield Lane. Captain Taylor West (54) top scored in Ramsey’s 201-5 before Jon Cade, David Caelaw and Mark Edwards each claimed three wickets as Camden were shot out for 108.

Fourth-placed Wisbech won’t be retaining their title despite an eight-wicket hammering of arch rivals March yesterday. Tommy Howgego (42) batted with grit for March, but he received precious little support in a team total of 103. Gary Freear (4-21) and Sam Rippington (3-28) did the bulk of the damage with the ball.

Sawston are second after beating Nassington by 57 runs in a low-scoring contest. Tariq Aziz couldn’t have done a lot more to help Nassington as he took 5-12 in Sawston’s 110 before top-scoring with 32 of of his side’s 57. Captain Alex Laud (4-30) also bowled well for Nassington.
