Ketton Lions won the Vitas Cricket Rutland Twenty/20 Trophy on Friday with a comfortable 32-run success over Uppingham Town at Oakham.

Opener Shakaar Mahmood (72) and Aussie Ben Bryant (58) did the bulk of Ketton’s scoring.

The opening partnership put on 95 runs for the first wicket, which saw Mahmood dismissed after he had thrown caution to the wind hitting a lot of aerial shots but nothing going to the field as he smashed 10 fours and two sixes in his match winning performance.

After his dismissal things settled down a little as Van Duykar scored 15 runs and Matt Bird, who came to the crease for the final two balls of the Ketton innings, finished the innings in style with a four and a six, giving Ketton a very respectable 165-6.

Uppingham used seven bowlers Mark Cox with four overs for 10 runs, but no wickets, was the most economical.

Danny Dumford took the bulk of the wickets with 3-32.

In reply Uppingham’s innings started badly losing two wickets for just three runs to opening bowlers Ulrich Van Duyker and D Cotton (1-27 runs).

It was a day for Lions’ slow bowlers as Ulrich Van Duyker and Matt Milner claimed eight wickets between them as Uppingham closed on 133-9.

Van Duyker’s early wickets on his way to 4-12 from four overs pretty much sealed Ketton’s victory early in the Uppingham innings.

Uppingham’s Jamie Dumford (31) steadied the innings with James Keywood (43) as Uppingham chased a fourth successive victory in the Rutland Twenty/20, but instead lost to a team skippered by the competition’s sponsor, Rob Vitas.

Alex Ashwin hit a quick 23 runs from nine balls faced but Uppingham could not get close to the Ketton total with a closing score of 138-9 wickets.

Ketton next face a Stamford KO Shield semi-final at Market Deeping tonight (Monday, 6pm) when they will be without Vitas Cricket Rutland Twenty/20 Trophy final man of the match Bryant who is on Minor Counties duty with Cambs. Nassington host King’s Keys in the other semi-final.

Uppingham also lost in the Stamford Charity Cup Final to Nassington last Monday (June 29).

Ketton Lions 165-6 (S. Mahmood 72, B. Bryant 58).

Uppingham 133-9 (U. Van Duyker 4-12, M. Milner 4-37).
