Langtoft United finish a turbulent year on a high
After a turbulent year that’s seen the Vikings record their highest ever PDFL finish and then totally rebuild the squad, a 1-0 win against a well placed Holbeach United Reserves was the perfect way to sign off 2015.
The game started with Holbeach on the front foot and the hosts Langtoft looked sluggish.
Holbeach dominated the opening exchanges, forcing the Vikings to defend deep, but never carving out a proper chance. A rallying call from skipper Jobi Froud finally kicked the Vikings into gear, The first opening was carved out by Keishon Wilson down the right flank, skipping past his man he fired a cross into the box that was turned towards goal by Sam Thompson, but easily dealt with by the away keeper.
The Vikings pressed, Nathan Fryar broke from left back and fired a long range shot just over, and Froud saw his long range effort well saved. Langtoft however weren’t having it all their own way, Holbeach looked very dangerous on the break. If not for a Daryl Todd’s tactical foul, Holbeach would have been one-on-one with Andrew Isabell in the Vikings’ goal.
Langtoft started the second half brighter, Keishon was getting lots of joy and was a constant threat forcing the Holbeach defence deeper and deeper, clearly worried by his pace, and it was Keishon who would get the crucial opener.
He popped up on the left, stepping inside the Holbeach midfielder he fired a cross, which became a shot, towards the back post which out foxed the keeper and narrowly missing Nathan Fryars head, it flew into the top corner of the goal.
Now chasing the game Holbeach threw caution to the wind and flooded forward but they found a Vikings defence in form, Daryl Todd the only addition to the defence that looked so strong against Wisbech in the previous game.
The only real opening came when the Holbeach striker broke free of the defence, but keeper Isabell saved one-on-one to earn the win.
Langtoft manager Ryan Hunnings said: “It was a very well contested game, very competitive and a real test of our character, we looked off the pace for the first 15 minutes, we really couldn’t get going, I think the pitch and the quality of our opposition caught us cold. Jobi did a good job at the start of he game to get us going. After that we showed what we’re made of, matching a side that’s started the season very well, and looking like a very good unit.
“Defensively we were well organised today, Steven Slack marshalled his defence well and made some important blocks in the last few minutes. As I said last week Thommo and Keishon have given he squad a boost the team spirit is brilliant at the moment. Let’s hope 2016 can be as successful as 2015, if not so eventful.
