Coming off the back of a big week for Langtoft United where they progressed to the last four of the PFA Cup for the first time, expectations from the Vikings were high despite playing a very good Peterborough Sports Reserves side that have only lost once all season, and that was to the Vikings in the reverse fixture.

However it was a bridge too far on Saturday as the Vikings went down 2-0 in the PDFL Premier Division.

The Vikings picked up where they had left off against Pinchbeck, pressuring Sports high in their own half and forcing the home side into sloppy play, but after the initial first 10 minutes it was the home side that dominated the first half, playing some excellent football and forcing the Vikings to defend deep.

The breakthrough came when the Sports left winger crossed to Gary Gibbs, Gibbs held off Dan Jarman well and powered the ball high into the roof of the net to give goalkeeper Andrew Isabell not chance.

The Vikings were down but they stood up well to an onslaught from the home side, defending very well and restricting the home side to only one more effort on target, and well saved one-on-one.

In the second half the Vikings seemed like a team reborn, they again started to cause the home side problems and the game was more of a contest, every 50/50 and loose ball was now being competed for and the Vikings looked like a potential breakthrough might be on the way, but it wasn’t to be.

Sports countered on Langtoft isolating the defence with six men up-field, doubling their lead with a shot from Adam Richardson that sneaked into the bottom corner. Langtoft finished the game the stronger side but couldn’t find a way through a very well organised defence.

Langtoft United manager Ryan Hunnings said: “It developed into a good game, first half I think I got the tactics wrong, I tried to make us hard to play against and compact, changing the formation back to our normal style at half time seemed to be the catalyst that got us playing.

“Peterborough Sports are a very good side, they out ran us and out fought us first half, it was good to see a reaction in the second half and we’ll take a lot of positives from the game.”
