Bourne Deeping Men’s 2nds were beaten by St Neots 1sts for a second time this season on Saturday when they went down 3-2 at home.

The Dragons started the game with energy and purpose, hoping for some points after a scrappy 2-0 defeat to St Neots earlier in the season.

The Dragons had lots of the ball early on in the game, and made use of their possession by attacking the St Neots defence and testing their keeper with some searching shots. Mark Cox provided some great passes to the Dragons’ wingers and strikers.

The constant pressure applied by the Dragons quickly resulted in a goal, fired into the bottom left corner by Dan Tyler on his reverse side, which was almost built upon quickly afterwards by Matt Clarkson, who hit the post with an almost perfectly placed deflection.

Now in control the Dragons began to get complacent and lose focus, giving the ball away in midfield and leaving the defence wide open. St Neots capitalised on this, and punished the Dragons with two goals in quick succession from their experienced team.

The Dragons’ efforts swiftly resulted in a goal, with Shane Carlton’s reverse shot smashed into the top left corner, putting the Dragons back in the game.

The last 20 minutes of the game was very evenly matched, with numerous attempts on goal at both ends, with Shane Carlton cutting through the St Neots defence, almost giving himself a perfect goal scoring opportunity, had he not decided to try and get past their last defender.

Just as the game looked like it was beginning to draw to a close, the Dragons lost the ball in the middle of the pitch, and St Neots, with one last effort, got through the surprised Dragons’ defence and slotted it past the keeper.

After the final whistle, the Dragons left the pitch, disappointed after their unfortunate 2-3 defeat.
