WAKERLEY and Barrowden Cricket Club made a fantastic start to their 2011 league campaign, with an 8-wicket victory at S&L Corby 2nds.
Having switched to the Rutland League this season, the club made the best possible start with a win at the Corus Sports Ground and a fantastic eight-wicket haul for Johnny White.
Barrowden put the hosts in to bat first and the decision was justified immediately when Jonny White uprooted the off-stumps of Hallam and Whelan in the first over to leave S&L 2-2 after 1 over.
White then continued his assault on the S&L batting order, with wickets falling on a regular basis, completing his five-wicket haul in just the tenth over. His sixth wicket, shortly after, reduced S&L to 26-6 before Chris White chipped in with a wicket.
Jonny then claimed two more wickets to make it 44-9 and finish with incredible figures of eight wickets for seven runs from nine overs, including five maidens. Chris White claimed the final wicket to leave S&L 44 all out.
In reply, Barrowden went in search of maximum batting points but some tight bowling restricted the visitors. Jonny White made an aggressive start before falling for 22, and Chivers fell soon after for 2, but Tom Wilkins (4 no), and Dale Howkins (8 no), saw Barrowden to their target inside 16 overs.
Barrowden captain Chris White said: “We couldn’t have asked for a better start in the Rutland League.
“Some of the deliveries Jonny sent down were unbelievable and to finish with eight wickets, and conceding just seven runs, is outstanding.
“His performance, backed up with the way we fielded and the win have given the rest of us some confidence to take into our next fixture.”
