Stamford Lions have lost the services of top goalscorer Luke Ball for the rest of the season.

Ball has left the Peterborough League Premier Division high-flyers to go travelling around Australia for a year.

The in-form frontman has spearheaded the Lions’ charge for honours this season after producing performances that earned him selection for the Peterborough League representative side.

Lions boss James Sheehan said: “Everyone at the club wishes Luke all the best for his year out travelling Australia. From a selfish perspective, I tried to talk him into delaying it until May.

“His goalscoring form over the last two seasons has really helped propel the team into a top of the table side.

“He will be missed on the pitch and off it as he’s a big personality at training and in the dressing room.”

Ball was the club’s first choice right back for the 2015-16 season that ended with the Lions being crowned as Division one champions.

For the last 18 months he has played up front and finished last season with a 30-goal tally, 22 of those coming in his last 16 games of the campaign. Ball has backed that up with 24 goals in 21 games this season.

Lions, who were without a match last weekend, return to Peterborough League action on Saturday with a home clash against Sutton Bridge.
