Lions star makes century on Cambridgeshire debut

Ketton Lions’ star of the summer Ben Bryant cracked a ton on his Minor Counties Championship debut as Cambridgeshire enjoyed a strong opening day of their Minor Counties Championship clash against Buckinghamshire at Wisbech on Sunday.

The Lions’ Aussie - he’s eligible for minor counties cricket as he holds a UK passport - finished unbeaten on 101 as Cambs piled up 427-8 in their 90 overs. Bryant stroked 14 fours in a classy knock.

Peterborough Town’s Asim Butt was also in prime form. Butt hit 18 fours and a six in his 123 as Cambs took full advantage of an excellent batting track at Harecroft Road.

Butt’s only previous Minor Counties ton also arrived against Bucks last season.

Opener Ben Howgego (71) also batted well, while Ramsey’s Michael Cafferkey struck 29 from 26 balls. Nassington’s Dan Robinson (4) missed out.

Bucks close the first day on 77-2 as Wisbech seamer Sam Rippington and Peterborough Town professional Paul McMahon collected a wicket apiece.

The game resumes today (June 22, 11am).

Scores: Cambs 427-8 (A. Butt 123, B. Bryant 101no, B. Howgego 71, P. Richer 49, M. Cafferkey 29), Bucks 77-2.
