Rutland Horseshoes maintained the pressure on their rivals for the league title on Saturday, with a hard fought but eventually comprehensive 4-1 away victory over the talented and far too energetic for a Saturday, Leicester University side.

The Horseshoes started strongly, a recent reorganisation of the team has seen Carina Stevens move in to the defence.

Carina’s awareness and skills under pressure have helped Rutland to develop pressure on the opposition with excellent build up play from the back.

Good quick passing play from the midfield trio of Tim Sweet, Cath McComb and Anne Pollock gave Clare NJ and Chris Meadows, up front, plenty of early ball allowing them to turn the University defense and drive towards the D.

The constant pressure led to a goal midway through the first half with Meadows hitting a superb reverse hit from wide right beyond a stunned keeper.

A second was quickly added by Stuart Biggs to give Rutland a comfortable 2-0 lead at half time

Chris Meadows added his second of the game shortly after the interval, again pressure from midfield forced Leicester University back into the D. Meadows’ dynamic movement off the ball created enough space for a simple finish.

Against the run of play Leicester University broke against Rutland, with too many players committed forward Leicester outnumbered the Horseshoe defense and following a goal mouth scramble the ball was poked home to ruin Ian Kenyon’s clean sheet.

Any concerns of a University fight back were quickly put to bed, Stuart Biggs used sublime skill to beat first two runners from a short corner before reverse stick shooting past the keeper to score.

Despite Meadows and Biggs taking the plaudits for their goals the result was really built upon the solid defensive work of Tracey Taylor, Dave Cannie, Kevin SK, Rob Epton, and Carina Stevens.
