Deeping Rangers had to settle for a draw from their trip to the UCL Premier Division’s second place side Kirby Muxloe on Saturday, drawing 0-0.

This was the first fixture between the two clubs with Rangers travelling to Ratby Lane looking to close the points gap on their hosts but left ruing missed chances as the sides shared a stalemate.

The first half was a competitive affair in between the respective penalty boxes which resulted in few goal scoring opportunities.

Deeping’s Tom Smith fed Jason Kilbride, he skipped past Aaron Love to cross where Kirby’s Joe Cooper’s headed clearance fell for Scott Mooney, only for the Rangers striker’s shot to hit Joe Cooper and go out for a corner.

Muxloe’s Cooper then rose above all to meet Pradeep Bahrey’s corner to head wide, Bahrey got to the goal line to send a fierce cross that just avoided the arriving Aaron Love eight yards out.

Rangers had a mild penalty appeal when Mooney chased a ball in the home box and the home keeper made a good save pushing the ball away just before Mooney was about to nudge it past him.

A swift break from Muxloe saw Dan Sheahan’s diagonal ball release Jurrelle Philip out wide, only for him to shoot high under pressure from Matt Porter.

The second half started in the same vein as the first, Porter drove forward and as the home side backed off he shot for the far post only to see the ball clip Jamie Cooper and bounce away from goal.

Rangers started to exert some pressure on the home defence, Scott Coupland fed Mooney in the box, he held off Joe Cooper to turn and shoot high. Coupland’s corner was flicked on by Luke Hunnings only for Mooney to miss-kick his effort.

Kirby’s Bahrey curled a free kick just over the bar as the visiting defence kept their hosts at bay.

A good dribble from Kilbride saw him to the corner edge of the six yard box only to clip the bar with his shot, Mooney collected Porter’s throw in, turned and fired wide of the post.

Muxloe worked the ball from right to left where sub Connor Brown-Wingfield fed the free Bahrey and his shot forced Danny Bircham into a save with Porter clearing the rebound to safety.

Deeping’s Dan Flack then won the ball and found Mooney whom returned it into the path of Flack but his cross was put wide by Coupland.

Rangers substitute Jezz Goldson-Williams almost got a winner. He chased down a long ball, got the better of full back Aaron Love, and tried a delicate chip that just beat the bar to find the top of the net.

With the game into additional time Kilbride wriggled free to smash a shot against the foot of the post with the rebound falling into the path of the fast arriving Goldson-Williams but his touch was affected by a bobble and the ball cleared the empty goal.

Deeping are now up to sixth in the UCL Premier Division table. They play Holbeach United away on Wednesday, kick-off 7.45pm.
