AN Oakham teenager made a great start to his England career as part of a winning team of anglers in Ireland last week.
Toff Crowther, 14, of Parkfield Road, competed in Ireland with the England Youth Flyfishing team at Loch Owel in Ireland.
The youngest of the squad, he joined 13 other young anglers for two days of practice in wet and windy conditions before a full day’s competition when all 14 team members caught fish to earn England the gold medal, fending off Scotland, Wales and hosts, Ireland.
Toff, who attends Wilds Lodge School at Empingham, said: “We caught 38 fish, beating Ireland by 10. We had quite a few practice days at Rutland Water and Grafham.”
He began fishing when he was eight with his grandfather Tony Tibbert, and he already takes on senior anglers in Rutland Water’s Tuesday Night Boat League. “I just find it really relaxing,” he said.
Next year’s match will be held in Wales but before that Toff will compete in the annual Airflo International Competition at Rutland Water.
