Bourne Deeping Dragons first team travelled down the M1 to Harpenden for their first away game of the season and clinched a 1-0 win.
The home side finished last season comfortably in Division 1 so this was always going to be a testing game for the promoted Dragons.
After winning the toss and electing to take the ball, Bourne Deeping quickly earned a penalty corner.
A slick injection from Ben Slack and a sure stop from Al Glover saw Ritchie Collins’ attempt on goal stopped on the line by the defence.
The visiting Dragons continued to barrage the opposition’s D with short corner after short corner but were unable to score.
The home side came out fighting for the second half and gave the Bourne Deeping defence plenty to deal with.
As tensions flared it wasn’t long before somebody would see yellow.
The first sent for a sit-down was Alex Glover, followed soon after by a Harpenden player for a very strong challenge on Ben Slack.
A series of fine saves from penalty corners and determined open play kept the home side at bay until, with the game heading for a draw, Collins tumbled in the opponents’ D.
Expecting a penalty stroke for the foul, all were surprised when only a penalty corner was awarded. Nobody seemed ready to do anything when the corner ball was stopped on the top of the D.
Eventually the ball found its way to Shane Carlton who got a shot away, deflected in at about waist height by man-of-the-match Henry Winfield-Chislett.
The Dragon’s held out to stay unbeaten in Division 1.
This weekend they entertain Saffron Waldon at the Arthur Mellows pitch, push off 12.30.
