The new Bourne and Deepings Colts went down to a heavy loss away at Mansfield at the weekend.

Despite a lack of training sessions due to the weather, the colts travelled to Mansfield with an under-strength squad of just 13 players.

Borrowing a player from their opponents, the two sides played a fast and committed game of rugby with 14 players on each team.

With many of the team having to play out of position, Bourne and Deepings struggled to put together any cohesive attacks, and playing with fewer players than normal suited the Mansfield running game.

The penalty count was very heavily in the colts’ favour as Mansfield continually offended at the breakdown but they were unable to convert this to points.

As the game progressed, and the Bourne and Deeping players became more settled and familiar with each other, some good passages of play nearly put them over for a try several times, but Mansfield defended strongly.

Mansfield were a highly organised team with a well-drilled back line that ultimately scored six tries plus one conversion with no reply from the colts.

The game was played in the right spirit and both teams went off the pitch with smiles on their faces after a tough 80 minutes of rugby.

Bourne and Deeping Colts are a combined team from both clubs consisting of players from under-17 to under-19.

New players are always welcome to come and train on Thursday with matches played on Sundays. Visit for details.
