Bourne Rugby Club enjoyed a double win for the first time with impressive victories for the first and second teams on Saturday.

The 1st XV beat Corby 40-0 to keep alive their hopes of a top six finish in the Midlands 4 East (South).

Bourne ran in seven tries but skipper Adam Binns, who added a conversion and a penalty to Bourne’s points tally, was more happy to have shut Corby out.

Matt Ross and Tom Dixon both scored twice with Ashley Reeves, Ed Hilliam-Cooke and Jack Berry also crossing over.

Bourne have three tough games to round off the season, beginning with a trip to Oundle tomorrow, and Binns said: “Thorney beating Aylestone has made it more difficult to finish sixth but it can still be done.”

Bourne: Jake Appleby, Xanti Xipu (Thomas Donely), Neil Wood (Lee Wilcox), Anthony Hilliam-Cooke (Tom Douglas), James Patterson, John Hume, Ed Hilliam-Cooke, Tom Dixon, Matt Ross, Jack Berry, Adam Binns, Ashley Reeves (Dan Bonham), Aiden Smith.

Bourne’s 2nd XV finally broke their winless streak on Saturday with a 17-10 win over Sleaford B.

Bourne’s mercurial captain Neil Oglesbee was able to select a more balanced and experienced side than the team that suffered a heavy loss a week earlier,

The pack worked hard to provide a platform for the backs, and the front row of Tom Mellor, Jordan Payne and Carmen Colletto won the early exchanges to set up Payne to score the opening try.

Bourne contnued to press and it wasn’t long before the enigmatic Dave McLaren broke through two tackles to touch down beneath the posts with Tom Bentley converting.

As the game progressed, Bourne asserted themselves further and the impressive Harry Thornburn powered through a gap to cap a fabulous senior debut.

As tiredness set in, Bourne started to concede needless penalties, and Sleaford took full advantage and reduced the defecit.
