Bourne Wheelers Tim James and Maddie Gammons took massive strides towards earning their first representative honours on Saturday with excellent performances in the Notts and Derby league cyclo-cross race at Bingham.
The pair were racing against the best riders in the Midlands at what was the first qualifing event for the East Midlands squad ahead of the upcoming inter-regional cyclo-cross championships.
Conquering an extremely technical course, Maddie finished third in the girls’ race with Tim eighth in the boys’ event.
Both travel to Lutterworth this weekend for the final qualifier knowing that similar performances should see them on the team in two weeks time.
Closer to home, the Wheelers fielded a smaller than normal team in the seventh round of the Lincolnshire Cyclo-Cross League at Stroxton near Grantham.
With Bourne’s top youths absent, it was left to Adam Botteley to bring the team home with a season’s best of sixth.
Close behind, and packing really well, were Dan Burton 7th, Aaron Bateman 8th and Damian Rutterford 9th.
Joe Collins had his best race of the year finishing in 14th, with Jamie Nation 23rd and Jess Woodworth 26th.
In the U12 race the Galpin brothers Alex and Dan finished 8th and 10th respectively.
The final race of the day tested the senior riders on a deteoriating circuit.
Finally getting back to the kind of form he showed last year, Mark Botteley was the first of Bourne’s quartet of riders to finish in 20th.
Not far behind was Bart Kieres in 24th, with Phil Galpin 50th. Sian Botteley was first lady junior while Steve Collins was a non-finisher with a puncture.
