Bourne Tennis Club’s teams bounced back from their recent double defeat with two narrow but relieving wins.
The men’s seconds beat Sleaford 5-4 and not to be outdone the ladies firsts won against Grantham by the same margin.
For the men Keith Wallace and Ed Whitfield had scant trouble disposing of the opposition 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, 7-6, 6-3 while David Kelby and Tim Bradley did enough to secure overall victory with 6-3, 4-6, 10-5, 6-1, 6-4 before running out of steam 7-5, 5-7, 3-10.
Elsewhere father-son combination Martin and James Meadows gave their best, winning a couple of encouraging sets to take the opposition to tie-breaks 7-6, 3-6, 9-11, 7-5, 3-6, 6-10 before fading to 4-6, 2-6 but by then Bourne were home and possibly dry in this stormy summer for tennis.
In the ladies match against Grantham all three Bourne pairs in their early games seemed to be stuck in their previous week’s dismal vein of form, but showed their character in finishing well against a Grantham side fielding a couple of former Bourne stars in Holly Richardson and Liz Isles.
For Bourne, Lisa Edwards and Helen Whitfield began with a hesitant 2-6, 0-6 before building up to 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.
