BURGHLEY Park Golf Club’s annual past captains’ reunion brought together 38 past club and ladies captains for their annual competition and dinner last week.

Terry Moss did a great job in arranging the event, which was hosted by present incumbent Brian Churchill and the club was delighted to welcome back a number of past captains who no longer play golf.

Heading the honours list were Isabel Gallagher, who was ladies captain in 1965, and Meg Brown who held the post in 1971.

Thirty-six players contested the golf which was jovial but hard fought. In the Ladies section, 2005 captain Sheila Mayman edged out Kay Hircock on countback over the last six holes after both scored 37 points. Anne Hughes was third on 33.

Dave Tilley, who was club captain in 2005 took the Men’s prize with an impressive 40 points to seal a unique double.

Never before had both events been won by captains from the same year.

Keith Duff had an outstanding back nine, scoring 21 points and finishing birdie-birdie on the 17th and 18th for 37 points. But he was unable to catch runaway leader Tilley. John Mayman completed a good day for the Mayman family, coming third with 36.

The Ladies Rabbit Cup, for players with handicaps of 27-36, was held in conjunction with a medal competition for all other players.

Anne Fensome, playing off 31, shot a net 75 to take both the Rabbit Cup and the medal prize. Debbie Richardson took second place in the Rabbit Cup with a net 76, with Josie McDougall third on 83.

In the medal, Janet Duff took second place with a net 76, ahead of Debbie Richardson (also 76) on countback.

l BURGHLEY’S C team welcomed Stoke Rochford to Burghley last week but despite fielding a strong side were overwhelmed by a Stoke team playing at the top of their form.
