Climax in LCP Cup at Burghley Park Golf Club

Have your say

The second part of the three round competition for the LCP Cup took place at Burghley Park on Sunday, with one of the biggest fields of the year turning out in warm but breezy conditions.

A total of 105 men turned out but the challenging conditions meant that only four were able to beat par.

Steve Coultas shot the low score of the day, with a net 67 in Division Two which contained a birdie and 9 pars, to leave him two shots clear of Graham Bedford on 69.

Division Three threw up two scores of 69, from Brian Topham and Chris Churchill, whilst Craig Cameron took the honours in Division One with a net 70, which contained a birdie and 10 pars. Things are boiling up nicely for the final round on Sunday.

Results: (Div 1) – 1st Craig Cameron 77-7=70, 2nd Matt Lem 76-5=71, 3rd Richard Vaughan 76-5=71; (Div 2) – 1st Steve Coultas 79-12=69, 2nd Graham Bedford 83-14=69, 3rd Peter Barnes 84-12=72; (Div 3) – 1st Brian Topham 85-16=69, 2nd Chris Churchill 92-23=69, 3rd Simon Howard 89-19=70.

l On the same day the ladies played the Autumn Leaves Four Ball Better Ball Medal competition.

A total of 30 players competed and produced some impressive scores in the windy conditions.

Countback was needed to determine the winners, with two teams coming in with a six under par score of 67. Barbara Allen and Jane Taylor put together a stronger back nine, to claim the title ahead of Gill Webb and Pippa Le Sage.

l The last ladies friendly match of the season was away at Luffenham Heath last week and, in spite of the last match going to the final hole, Burghley were unable to hang on and went down 2½ - 1½.

Ladies’ captain Janet Duff and her playing partner Gill Bedford had a big win in match one, but the remainder of the home team proved too strong for the visitors.

Results: Janet Duff & Gill Bedford won 5&4, Sue Churchill & Stephanie Crook halved, Pam Barton & Julie Emmins lost 5&4, Judy Cade & Barbara Allen lost 2 down.

l Monday saw the staging of the annual McKenzie Cup match between the seniors and the ladies, an event which always throws up some interesting questions about what handicap allowances should be used.

Clearly there needs to be some reflection on this before next year’s event, as the outcome was an 8-0 whitewash to the seniors.

Results: Pete Hickman & Bob Collier beat Janet Duff & Lynn Collen 2&1, Tony Caruth & Eric McKaig beat Ann Butland & Joan Hickman 6&4, Bob Parker & Keith Duff beat Sheila Mayman & Elspeth Irvine 2 up, Bill Purchase & Donald MacMillan beat Shirley Caruth & Jill Unsworth 5&3, David Cleminson & Ian Roberts beat Pauline Purchase & Pam Collier 4&3, David Porteous & Brian Plowright beat Joanne Wheatley & Anne Fensome 3&2, Robert Irvine & Chris Harrison-Smith beat Jan Devlin & Marie Allwood 473, David Devlin & Jim Clarke beat Helen Dale & Mollie Plowright 4&3.
