STAMFORD Tennis Club’s William Barker was U8 runner-up at the Lincolnshire Junior Closed Championships at Boston recently.

There were 12 boys competing in the singles in William’s age group with players split into two divisions and playing matches in a round robin format.

William won four of his five group matches to face the winner of the other division in the semi-final - a match he won comfortably.

In the final, William faced the only boy to have beaten him in the group stage, when he lost 10-1. But he played strongly in the final, serving well to narrowly lose 10-8.

William’s coach Carole Wilson said: “I am delighted with William’s performance. He combines good tactical awareness and rapidly improving technical skills with a fierce competitive spirit. He also displays good sportsmanship regardless of a match’s outcome.

“He has taken the opportunity to identify some areas of his game to work on, learning from his defeats while enjoying his victories.”
