It has been a bitter-sweet week for Eastfield A in Division 1 of the Stamford and Rutland Table Tennis League.

They lost their perfect record when being held by Eastfield MTTG, but the five points earned ensured that they retain the title of champions for another season.

The regular pairing of Daniel Fielding and Shaun Murray always meant that dethroning them would prove difficult, although Miroslav Vala played well to defeat Shaun on the night.

The champions also defeated perennial rivals MTTG A in a 6-4 scoreline, and both Shaun and Daniel were undefeated.

Although the best MTTG A can now achieve is second place, they travelled to Bourne B and secured a comprehensive 9-1 victory. Dave Needham and Chris Weston remained unbeaten for the visitors, while Trevor Carter picked up the consolation point for Bourne.

Hampton, last year’s runners-up, dropped another point in a 5-5 draw at Uffington CC A. Dave Rowell, their most consistent player of the season, picked up another full house, but Matt Durrands and Greg Baker replied with two wins apiece for the cricketers.

In division 2, Stamford Free Church travelled with a strong team to bottom club Bourne E and won 10-0, moving them up to second in the table.

Regular players Rob Elliott and John Chambers were joined by Ralph Rogers to ensure a comfortable evening; however, with Eastfield C and Bourne C having matches in hand, the Churchmen will have to win all their remaining games to have a chance of retaining their position.

Braunston B continue to lead the table following a 10-0 drubbing of Uffington CC B. The experienced trio of Bill Seese, Vic Hoffman and David Smart all enjoyed their evenings, but the title is still far from decided.

The cricketers earned some success of their own with a 9-1 victory over Bourne E. Martin Willgress and Chris Gardiner won three times and Chris Alston twice.
