Former club captain Arthur Dethick eclipsed red-hot favourite Geoff Godsmark to win Rutland County Golf Club’s Open Seniors Winter Classic.

Played over five rounds in five months, the event is now in its eighth year and attracted players from as far afield as Yorkshire and the West Country.

This year’s final round presented a showdown between Godsmark, from Scraptoft, on 26 points who was eight points ahead of his nearest rival, Dethick.

Godsmark however, failed to add the single point he needed to win the event and saw a triumphant Dethick finish second on the day with 39 Stableford points to give him nine classic points for overall victory by the narrowest of margins.

Rob Brown, also from Scraptoft, scored a brilliant 41 on the day for first place and Geordie golfer Rob Elliot was third on 39 pts.

Overall Eclectic Result. 1st A Dethick 27pts; 2nd G Godsmark 26; 3rd Rob Brown 24.

Despite being played in atrocious conditions, the March Greensomes attracted a decent field with winter specialists Pete Maksymiw and Pete Siciliano blazing round in a victorious net 66.

They were five shots clear of second-placed duo Phil Drury and Gerry McIntyre.

l Looking to bolster the junior section this year with their Junior Scholarship scheme, the club has welcomed back former Leicestershire junior county player Rhys Evans, who will now spearhead the junior team and hopefully, if selected, play in the Scratch League team.

l This weeks 2-from-3 seniors’ competition produced a high standard of golf with five out of nine groups achieving 85 points or more.
