Bourne Deeping Dragons Ladies’ 1st team ran out 2-1 winners in a tight match with City of Peterborough 4ths on Saturday.
The Dragons Ladies had been looking forward to this match with a few close matches between the sides last season. It was time to see if the coaching and practice had paid off.
Dragons started well with some great movement of the ball but not the conviction. Peterborough had a lot of the play as Dragons failed to keep the ball.
Peterborough made a beautiful pass down the wing to one of the youngest of players who just out skilled the Dragons defence to pass a ball into the danger zone for an easy goal.
Dragons were 1-0 down but a captain’s guidance from the sidelines helped calm them down.
They showed good movement and a great pass made by Nadine Curtis to Kat, who showed pace and skill, saw them score an equaliser into an open goal.
After half-time the Dragons came out with their game heads on and kept pace and shape to help get a number of short corners, but they failed to take advantage of them.
The ball was back and forth for a while with a little frustration coming from both sides.
Finally the Dragons moved the ball into the D and, after what seemed like an age of scrappy play in there, Evie found the back of the goal.
With Dragons now 2-1 up they committed themselves to the Peterborough end of the pitch which meant the defence was left a little thin and when Peterborough did make it out of their half it led to a good five minutes of testing defensive play and multiple short corners which were defended beautifully by the keeper Phoebe Martin to secure the victory.
l It was a tough day for Bourne Deeping Men’s Fifth team who were beaten 5-0 at home on a wet and miserable afternoon by Cambridge City 6th team on Saturday.
