Hockey: Winning ways continue for Rutland Ladies

Have your say

Rutland Ladies remain unbeaten this season after picking up their first cup victory, in the opening round of the Cambridgeshire Ladies League Premier Cup.

Rutland beat Cambridge University Ladies but faced their toughest test yet, winning 1-0 thanks to a goal from captain Katie Richardson.

The Rutland side won a series of early short corners where pre-match practice on set-plays paid off with Richardson scoring low into the corner of the goal.

As the first half progressed the match became more even. Nic Cage made some crucial interceptions and Pippa Stubbs saved several close range shots.

Rachel Richardson took more control in the second half, creating more opportunities for the forwards.

At the other end, there were several narrow escapes for Rutland who return to league action tomorrow against the only other unbeaten side, Newmarket, when they will have to be more clinical in front of goal.
