Rutland County’s Ollie Huxley shot 74 in the first round of the Leicestershire U18 Championship to qualify for the matchplay event on day two at the Leicestershire Golf Club.
Playing high quality golf, 16-year old Huxley cruised to 3up after five holes in the semi-final but could not keep up his challenge and finally lost on the first extra hole.
Earlier in the month he travelled to Scotland and shot 77 in the Junior Open at the Eden Course.
Huxley’s golfing day was not finished as he rushed back to Rutland County to help stave off relegation in the Scratch League as the A team faced a do-or-die match against Melton Mowbray.
Anything but a win for County would result in relegation and Melton would stay up, and the big guns were called up by both teams with Michael Pressick returning from overseas commitments to lead the way for the home team.
He came off with a 5&4 win to put the skids under the visitors.
Neil Paylor then won 8&6, Deggie Palmer lost 2 down, Jordan Paylor won 4&2, Chris Palmer won 4&3, John Peyser lost 5&4, Ollie Huxley lost 1 down and it was left to Neil Armstrong’s 3&2 win to secure a 5-3 victory and safety in the league.
Melton went home with the prospect of next year’s golf in the lower division.
A tight match at home for the C team against Belton Park saw Roger Overton’s side just edge the visitors 3½-2 ½ .
The half was secured by wily old veterans Dave Rippin and Cliff Knapp.
Kev Moxham and Nathan Harper won 1 up, Steve Lowe teamed up with Pakka Risi for a 1 down loss, Jordan Paylor and out-of-form Roger Overton lost 2&1, Gerry McIntyre and Josh Paylor won 2&1, and Chris Palmer and Woolley Man sealed the team victory by winning 1 up.
