Jason’s jubilant in tricky conditions

DEEPING St James AC fished a sweepstake match on their stretch of the River Nene at Wansford on Sunday.

With a cold, downstream wind, conditions were not easy and winner from peg 4 was Jason Wilmer with a mainly dace net for 7lb 9oz. Jason fished a 5m whip with bronze and red maggot over groundbait.

Mark Horsley took second spot with a 5lb 5oz mixed bag from peg 15 on the pole and maggot. Third was Carl Fisher with 4lb 8oz of roach caught on the waggler and caster from peg17.

Next weeks match is the Fur and Feather at Lake Ross where all pegs full.

l THE Horseshoe Lake at Wansford will be closed from Monday until further notice due to major refurbishment work.

l RUTLAND Water hosted its popular annual Fur and Feather match on Sunday with fish plentiful and a good size.

Winner was Geoff Allsop from Melton Mowbray who netted five fish for 18lb 9¼oz, with rainbows up to 4lb 11oz. Second was fisheries manager Jon Marshall who took two fish for 10lb 8¾oz.

One of Jon’s fish weighed 6lb 9¼oz and was the best fish of the match (and Jon’s own personal best Rutland rainbow).

Third place was taken by Alan Taylor with four fish for 9lb 12oz. Ray Jeffrey was fourth.

Half of the fish taken in the match weighed more than 3lb with Rutland warden Andy Ainscough netting a 5lb 6oz personal best. The top three anglers won seasonal hampers and Jon Marshall won a bottle of gin for taking best fish..
