OAKHAM Tennis Club’s Ladies can celebrate a win at last.

They have come close in several matches but finally got a result in their favour this week, beating Rothley 7-2.

Captain Debbie Powell was forced to make changes but she and Jane Wood kept a clean sheet against Rothley’s first team.

Oakham’s second strings Celine Veniat and Laura Reekie combined well to win all three rubbers, conceding only six games in the process. Michelle Greening and Ana Webber, who were paired for the first time, began well against the visitors 1sts before eventually conceding defeat. They went on to beat the seconds in a tight tussle but this seemed to take it out of them as they lost narrowly to the thirds.

The ladies second team also had to make a few changes with captain Carolyn Davies partnering Michelle Greening for the first time this season. They had two good wins, against the thirds and seconds, then found the visitors’ firsts more resilient, missing out narrowly.

Mel Johnson and Helen Maitland played their usual solid game but they too discovered that the visitors’ firsts were too accurate. Katie Bryan and Sarah Chinnery teamed up for the first time and tried everything they could to secure a point, but without success. Oakham’s men’s 2nds lost 5-4 at Kibworth where they unlucky not to get a bonus point.

Gordon Reekie and Nick Crowson won their first two rubbers then came across a very able first pair with youth on their side.

Skipper Kim Renwick and Justin Fowler worked well together but were hindered by Justin not being back to full strength.

Jeremy Wood and Greg Delaney beat their opposite number but found the others too stubborn to give way.
