Ladies enjoy a winning start

THE Ladies League team have got off to a fine start to the year under captain Annie McCulloch.

They won their first match against Spalding 4-0 and followed that up with a 3½-½ victory in rough conditions against Belton Woods.

They will play Belton away on May 20 when they hope to keep up their winning ways to push for a climb up the league.

l GREETHAM Ladies took to the Lakes course in miserable May Bank Holiday conditions to compete in the first qualifying round of the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes.

Former Ladies President, Beryl Crossland and her partner Rena Lister won with 33 points. Kay Ropson and Lizzie Taylor were second with 30 points and Val Guy and Valda Austin were third with 28.

Beryl and Rena will now go forward to the next round at Spalding Golf Club when they hope for much better weather.

l SOPHIE Beardsall and Emma Tipping took part in the County Championships recently.

The Greetham pair lost in the quarter-finals but have both been selected for the Lincolnshire County Team for County Week in June.

l GREETHAM Valley hosted Peterborough Business Club for joint 20th anniversary celebrations with Boongate Kia sponsoring the hole-in-one-competition with a car as the first prize.

There were singles and team competitions for the field of 72 players as well as numerous nearest the pin in two.

Last year’s winner of the singles competition, Andy Cave, teamed up with Richard Boucher, Andy Philips and Andrew Whitehead, and won the team prize with a creditable 133 scored in difficult conditions.

Cave, playing off 15, also scored 36 points to take third place in the singles competition. Dave Robinson, off 24 was second with 37 seven but they were some way behind the winner, 19- handicapper Steve Compton who had a great score of 41 points.

To celebrate the two clubs’ anniversaries, World Golf Trick Champion Geoff Swain was invited to demonstrate his skills and he braved the rain to wow the crowd of “normal” golfers. Geoff also held a question and answer session with players at the club.

Stoke Rochford

STOKE Rochford Seniors endure a frustrating first month of the new season with two of their opening matches ending in defeat and the other three cancelled because of torrential rain.

However, they were pleased to see the arrival of May and secured their first win, beating Sleaford 6-2.
