A pupil from Oakham School has had a string of incredibly successful triathlon races this season, currently putting him in first place for his age group in the East Midlands Series.

Hayden Greaves’ most recent victory was at the Inter-Regional Championships qualifier at Mallory Park, Leicestershire.

After a strong 250m open water swim, Hayden came out in around 10th place. He was 8th after his first transition and second after half a bike lap.

He eventually led the race on the 7km bike , with the fastest time of the day in that segment, and entered the final transition with some of the country’s top triathletes close on his heels.

He stuck with them for the most of the 2.2k run and only dropped off in the last 400m where he placed first in the East Midlands and fourth overall, only 16 seconds behind the winner and three seconds off the podium.

This was one of two qualifying races for the Inter-Regional Championships, which will be held at Mallory Park in September.

Hayden, who is 14 and lives in Oakham, has recently returned from a week-long training camp in the Alps. So far, this season, Hayden has taken part in three other events in the East Midlands Series, where he won twice and came second once.

This recent victory will stand him in excellent stead for the final qualifier on Sunday.
