Oakham veterans won their second match of the new season last week.
Non-playing captain Gordon Smith got the mixture correct again as he changed his team slightly to meet one of the ‘Goliaths’ of Leicestershire tennis – Carisbrooke.
His re-arrangements worked very well as first pair Gordon Reekie and Edmund Dry faced the visitors’ seconds and forced errors from the start.
They won both sets with relative ease. Then they faced the first pair who were much more of a handful but eventually shared the honours – a set each.
Meantime, second strings Ken Stewart and Mike Dunford had set off at a great pace against Carisbrooke’s firsts. They did not give their visitors time to settle, or get used to the different court surface, so took the first set without too many problems.
The second set proved much more difficult with each pair forcing errors whenever they could.
As they reached an inevitable tie-break, it seemed as if the local pair had relaxed too much but they came back to win the tie-break quite strongly. Their second match was more evenly contested with each pair taking a set.
Overall Oakham won the match 6-2 to continue their perfect start to the new season.
