THE Oaks returned from what could have been a tricky tie at Bakewell with a victory and bonus points for scoring four tries.

Oakham began slowly on a boggy pitch that hadn’t seen action since early December but once they got started proved the stronger side.

James Padley, who was recently promoted to the first team scored one of Oakham’s tries and coach Mark Powell praised the versatile back who can play fly-half, full-back or out on the wing.

“He is an exciting player,” said Powell, adding: “We made a few changes. Adam Price made a difference in the front row and Martin Stimson was very effective.”

Once Oakham got going they scored pretty easily with Will Armstrong and Johnny Harrison adding tries and Mark Matthews adding points with his kicking.

Oakham’s South African Carel Fourie gave away three penalties which led to all of Bakewell’s points. Powell said: “Carel is a bit of an enigma. He has an abrasive line and plays to the limits of the rules but I am delighted to have him in the side. He brings us a different direction at times.”

Oakham: Will Armstrong, James Padley, Johnny Harrison, Ben Harries, Tom Armstrong, Mark Matthews, Tom Harries, Adam Price, James Yoeman, Rhys Grieve, Tom Scott, Phil Gant, Martin Stimson, Angus Boyle, Carel Fourie. Reps: Dale Corner, Kevin Oliver, Tom Burton.
