OAKHAM’s Roy Taylor caught the best fish of the week at Rutland Water - an 8lb 2oz brown trout - last Thursday night.
Roy was using a floating fry close in, off the bank to land the best brown so far this season and it took all of Roy’s fly line plus backing.
Rob Keeber of Leicester also took a good sized brown of 7lb 3¾oz.
The weather has been challenging for anglers recently but several other anlgers still managed good catches with big fish.
Ron Brown and Ray Grey had a good day’s fishing, anchoring up using nymphs to catch fish in the 4½-5lb range, as did Empingham angler Ron Oldroyd, who had fish of similar size, fishing nymphs deep the South Arm.
l OAKHAM Angling Club were at a new venue last week, Fields End Fishery near Benwick.
But while the venue might have been new the result was the same as it has been for the last couple of weeks with Paul Smith continuing his great form to win off peg 8. He put together a fine net of mainly silver fish using the long pole and fishing maggot up in the water to weigh in an excellent 86lb 10oz.
Second place, also fishing up in the water but with waggler and pellet approach, was Bob Crabtree who weighed in 55lb 01oz off peg 4. Third, after a peg to peg battle off pegs 5 and 6 was Alan Wiggins who weighed in 49lb 14oz of paste caught carp beating Bob Burton by a couple of pounds.
