Rutland Ladies defeated after long lay-off

Rutland Ladies 2nds were beaten 3-1 by Newmarket 2nds when they finally returned to action after several weeks of cancellations.

Newmarket took and early lead but Nicki Perry hit back for the Rutlanders after the hosts’ goalkeeper had pulled off some superb saves.

In the second half, some fantastic skill from the MacDonald sisters up front, Maeve and Aisling, led to several short corners but Rutland couldn’t find another goal and they were hit by quick counter-attacks at the other end as Newmarket used their pace in wide to sneak two past the helpless Lexi Taylor who had a great debut.

They found the going tough against strong opposition.

Rutland’s U16 side competed in the ‘Tier 2’ regional stage of the National Championships at Beeston on Sunday.

There were clearly plenty of nerves as they succumbed to a 6-0 deficit at half time in their opening game against the hosts, but they eventually got going and came out with some credit, ultimately losing 8-1.

Their second game was much more even but ultimately their opponents were just a little more clinical in front of goal and edged a game that ebbed and flowed 3-2.

In their third and final match, Rutland took on King’s Lynn’s Pelicans and despite some heavy legs at this stage, the Rutland girls exerted a measure of control, taking the lead and holding it until the last 10 minutes, when their opponents found an extra burst of energy to hit back and score twice, the second with the game’s last play.
