Rutland turn on the style

Have your say

Rutland Hockey Club’s men turned on the style to record their first league win since the turn of the year - an 8-2 trouncing of Alford - on Saturday.

Fourth-placed Rutland can neither be promoted or demoted and with Jonny Ashwin and Marcus Parsons having returned from three months’ backpacking down under, the instruction to the team was to go out and play in any position they fancied and enjoy it.

Goalkeeper Luke Hardy had to pull off a few fine saves early on but Rutland soon began to move the ball around, picking up any player that was available to made their way to goal and at half-time they were 3-0 ahead.

Robert Forster, at centre forward, caused all sorts of problems, hammering the odd shot at goal and was there with his long reach to tap in one of his two goals, while Ben Harford fired home a strong drag-flick and Jo Chedd skilfully weaved his way in.

Rutland were soon a further three goals ahead in the second half as Harford added two more for his hat-trick and Forster bagged his second.

However, in their drive to all score a huge hole was left for Alford to break through and score two quick replies.

This seemed to sober the Rutland side with the exception of Harry Robertson who attacked into the D, determined to outgun Harford. Robertson, however, only managed to add two fine goals to the score sheet before the final whistle.

Rutland play third-placed Cambridge South away on Saturday.

Rutland: Luke Hardy, Jonny Ashwin, Marcus Parsons, Joe Chedd, Harry Robertson, Alan Selby, Rob Forster, Ben Harford, Tom Wilson, Nick Pinner, Louis Bowden, Jordan Allen, Mark Pollock.
