Shoot-out exit is harsh on Rutland

Rutland U16 3 Alderley Edge U16 3

RUTLAND U16s were knocked out of the National Youth Plate in the cruellest fashion at the last 16 stage.

The game started edgily but it was Rutland that finally opened the scoring with Oscar Bennison neatly slipping the ball past the keeper.

Somewhat harshly, centre-half, James Meadows, was sin binned but despite some outstanding goalkeeping from Luke Hardy to keep Alderley at bay, they eventually found a gap and equalised.

Rutland were the stronger side again, after the break and Steven Palmer scored a superb solo goal from a short corner, walking the ball in.

However, Alderley came back with an unstoppable reverse stick shot to put the score all square again.

Rutland continued to make fast incisive breaks with Jack Bishop streaking in from the right wing to win a short corner. This time a slip to Oscar Bennison found the net and put Rutland ahead with just 10 minutes left.

Again Alderley threw everything at Rutland and forced another equaliser.

With the score 3-3, it was once more down to penalty flicks to decide the winner and yet again, Rutland came out the losing side.

Rutland: Luke Hardy, James Young, Hamish Reid, Harrison Ginn, James Meadows, Robert Forster, Steven Palmer, Jack Bishop, Tom Wilson, Oscar Bennison, William Bourne, Harry Butchart.
