DEEPING St James Angling Club had a spare weekend in their match calendar and decided to kill two birds with one stone by having a work and fish match at their Horseshoe lake at Wansford on Monday.

Thirteen members turned up to work and made light work of tidying the banks with the last of the pegs were cleared and slabs distributed to all the appropriate pegs. Half the pegs are now complete and all 40 are now permanently pegged. The river stretch was also cleared of excess growth in readiness for the coming season.

Ten members then competed in the match and the lake was split into ten sections of four pegs with the competitors drawing for a section so as to spread everyone evenly around the lake.

Grahame ‘Foz’ Foster came out the clear winner from peg 2 with a stunning 27lb common carp caught on the pole using soft pellet on a 18’s hook.

This was his only fish of the match but was well clear of second place which went to Peter Hodson from peg 21 with 17lb 5oz. Third place went to Ray Torrington with 15lb 13oz from peg 18.

Next week’s match is the Club Cup and first round of the Knockout Trophy to be held at Eye Kettleby Lakes.

Results: 1st Foz Foster 27lb; 2nd Peter Hodson 17lb 5oz; 3rd Ray Torrington 15lb 13oz.
