RUTLAND Water Golf Club have finished runners-up to a strong Market Harborough side in the Leicestershire and Rutland Scratch League’s fifth division.

Captain Mark Smith thanked all the players for their support and commitment over the season, and in particular Nick Vance who remained unbeaten throughout the league.

He said: “Next year, with a stronger away record, we hope to go one better, and gain promotion.”

The team won their final match of the season, beating Humberstone Heights 4½-3½.

Marc Smith, Robbie Pengelly, Phill Hibbitt and Mat Hartwell all won their games, Nick Vance halved, and Robbie Reynolds, Steve High and Ben Stephens were defeated on the final day.

l THE club held its men’s and ladies’ club championships on Saturday 20th August, playing off the blue tees to stretch the course to a championship length of 6,846 yards.

Blustery winds made scoring difficult but there were still some excellent scores carded.

Best gross and club champion for 2012 is Richard Lavin with a gross score of 78. He was followed by Marc Smith (79) and Robbie Reynolds (80). Overall winner of net scores was Will Davies (81-15-66).

Division 1: 1st Richard Lavin, 78-8-70; 2nd Robbie Reynolds, 80-7-73; 3rd Mike Donaldson, 80-7-73 c/b.

Division 2: 1st John Clark, 88-13-75; 2nd John Tilley, 92-16-76; 3rd Bob Sachs 92-16-76 c/b.

Division 3: 1st Vinney Keefe 91-22-69, 2nd Jim Graham, 97-21-76, 3rd Phil Gealy 100-22-78.

Ladies best gross and Club Champion for 2012 is Jade Boggust with a gross score of 79. Jade was also the overall net winner with 79-08-71. Marion Clark (90-15-75) was second and Tracy Makey (104-24-80) third.
