Stamford School produced a strong all round display to defeat Bedford School 25-16 on Saturday.

Bedford were having a strong season having easily defeated Harrow last week and Stamford knew they would have to go up a gear after their win against Rugby School the previous week.

The early exchanges were pretty even. Bedford slotted over a penalty which seemed wake up the Stamford pack, who, following that strike started to take control of the game. They were held up over the line and then, following a well worked driving maul, Henry Mawhood dived over.

Sam Butler, Isaac Troughton and Henry Wills worked very well in the tight and soon Henry Hives and Callum Corbett were starting to get over the gain line. Again Bedford tried to apply pressure but good defensive work from Tom Davies and Charlie Dunbar held them just to a long range penalty.

The second half was full of tension and passion as a Bedford score took them ahead. The home side reacted accordingly and a penalty from Callum Crellin was followed by a series of great drives, which saw Mawhood dive over for his second. It was enough, as despite late pressure the Stamford defence held firm.

Coach David Laventure said: “Stowe, Oundle, Rugby and Bedford – that’s a huge test for your first four games of the season. They have shown great character and played some great rugby. More hard work to be done though.”
