Sunday quartet win Texas scramble

MEMBERS of Rutland County celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with a shotgun start Texas scramble which was open to all sections of the club.

Almost 100 golfers enjoyed the fun format and Sunday morning regulars Craig Allan, Deggie Palmer, Pete Siciliano and Andy Vernon recorded 13 birdies and five pars to win with a net 54.17.

Second, on 57.23, were Rick and Mandy Collins, Vikki Eglinton and Bill Robertson, and they were followed by the quartet of Dave Roberts, Rip Kirby, John Downey and Barrie Tiburon-Fisher on 58.39. Jan Reynolds was nearest the line and Aidan Staunton hit the longest drive.

l COUNTY’S Juniors kicked off their season in style with a fine 5-1 victory over visitors Birstall.

Imogen Huxley won 3 and 2, Jordan Paylor won 4 and 2, Ollie Huxley won 1 up, Josh Paylor won 1 up and Nathan Harper won 4 and 3.

Ollie Huxley also recorded a notable win in the June Medal which also saw him become a single-figure golfer. As the course standard scratch moved out to 73, Ollie was one of only two golfers to come to terms with exceptionally tough conditions and break par.

His net 69 just edged out Tom Dunn by one shot to win Division 1 with John Spinlove earning a one shot reduction in third on net 71, now playing off 11.

Packa Risi continues to impress, winning Division 2 with a net 71 and earning a one shot reduction. Danny Fowler was second on net 73, two shots ahead of Craig Allan.

l THE B team suffered a reverse away to Ramsey going down 3½ to 2½.

Results: Deggie Palmer and Barry Cheshire won 3 and 2; Dave Rippin and Chris Palmer lost 2 and 1, Martyn Gatehouse and Andy Vernon won 1 up, Dave Waddell and Pete Sis lost 1 down, Craig Allan and Pete Woolley lost 3 and 2, Jim Wilson and Cameron Shakespeare halved.

Mixed Doubles Champions Diana Barnett and Chris Palmer crashed out of the competition early after a convincing 3 and 2 win for Cliff and Heather Knapp.
