Top racing tipster Kevan Minter, known as The Colonel, gives Mercury readers his top tips for the week ahead. Kevan, who lives in Stamford, is trackside most days and is regularly on television.

The world’s oldest Classic, the St Leger, has attracted 43 entries for the 2013 race.

Boasting a record prize fund of £600,000, and run over one mile, six furlongs and 132 yards, the St Leger takes place for the 237th time on September 14, at Town Moor.

Aidan O’Brien was narrowly denied a clean sweep of English Classics and a historic Triple Crown last year when Camelot could only finish second to Encke at Doncaster.

Ireland’s champion trainer looks set to be well represented this year with 12 entries including Leading Light, who is the bookmaker’s’ 5/1 joint-favourite following a game success in the Group Three Queen’s Vase at Royal Ascot.

The Ballydoyle handler has also entered Irish Derby third Festive Cheer, Investec Derby fourth Battle Of Marengo and Eye Of The Storm, who hasn’t run since going down by a head in the Group Three Sandown Classic Trial in April.

l German-trained Novelist won the King George VI and Queen Elixabeth Stakes in fine style at Ascot last Saturday.

At 13/2, Novelist beat Trading Leather by five-lenghs with Hillstar back in third.

Winning jockey Johny Murtagh said: “He didn’t feel he was going fast but he was a very impressive winner.’’

l Lethal Force has been backed anti-post 11/4 from 7/2 for the Betfred Sprint Cup at Haydock in September along with James Fanshawes Society Rock 6/1 from 7/1.

Al Kazeem has been backed this week 5/1 from 6/1 with Betfred for the Prix De L’arc De Triomphee in October.

Roger Charlton reports his stable star in rude form and bang on target for his next run at York this month in the Juddmonte International Stakes.

At Glorious Goodwood on Saturday, in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, Sky Lantern will be all the rage to get back in the winner’s circle for Richard Hannon after an unlucky second at Newmarket last time out.
