Bourne Wheelers’ youth squad raced in the first round of the National Youth Circuit Series at Redbridge at the weekend.
The club had five riders over three different races.
In the boys U16 race, Tim James, Dan Burton and Campbell Pollock flew the flag while Adam Botteley and Maddie Gammons rode in the U14 girls races.
Highest placed finisher for the team was Maddie with an excellent 10th place, however the ride of the day was from Tim James who, despite only being 14 and racing against older riders, took 11th place.
Right from the start of the 25 mile race, Tim was in the thick of the action, in the front half of the 107 rider bunch. As the distance took its toll on the field and the peloton reduced in size, Tim held his nerve to claim his best ever result.
Dan also rode well before being pulled out just after half distance while Campbell was caught out of position early on and like Dan pulled out.
Adam made an encouraging debut performance at this level. Despite missing the early split early he was second bunch but never managed this but put in a stinging attack and finished 39th place out of the 97 starters.
Also racing at the weekend were seniors Mark Botteley and Jason Burrill at Solihull around the tight Tudor Grange circuit.
With an average speed of nearly 27mph, the bunch stayed together throughout the hour long race. In the finishing sprint Mark finished 4th just ahead of Jason in 7th.
