Abi Schofield from Market Deeping has qualified for a European Triathlon Champuionships just four months after taking up the sport.
The 24 year-old member of Peterborough’s top triathlon club, PACTRAC, realised she had a talent for the sport when taking part in a Novice ‘Fun’ Triathlon last May.
In September she qualified for the European Sprint Triathlon Championships to be held in Geneva, Switzerland next July thanks to a strong performance in her age group in the prestigious ‘Big Cow Sprint’ race in Olney.
This week Abi received generous sponsorship from Terry Wright Cycles who sold her a £4,000 bike for a heavily discounted price.
Abi is now hoping to attract sponsorship from other local companies to assist her travel to Switzerland next year when she will be representing Team GB.
Abi said: “I realised I had a talent an interest in triathlon when taking part in a fun event in May.
“I took part in three pool-based sprint triathlons on a second-hand men’s bike and then in the Big Cow Sprint from where I unexpectedly qualified.
“The main barrier to success in 2015 is funding. I have been teaching for 15 months and my salary does not cover the cost of living, travelling, entry fees and membership fees.
“Sponsorship and financial aid is vital to my success and I feel I can offer a unique personality and ethos that would support and benefit a company willing to help me.”
Abi has been a star athlete since her early teens.
She has competed in swimming at county and national level and she was a cross-country runner to district level.
She now regularly competes in races from 5km to ultra-marathon distance.
