Unstoppable Imogen takes county crown

Have your say

TEENAGER Imogen Huxley has won the Leicestershire Girls Championship, played at Beedles Lake last week.

Imogen, who plays at Rutland County Golf Club, shot 75 on day one and 76 on day two, enough to win by a clear eight shots.

Elsewhere, County’s ladies had a fine away draw at Greetham Valley thanks to a 3 and 2 win from Carole Westcott and Michelle Powell and a tigerish 1-up win from skipper Bridget Yardley and Meg Tasker. Mandy Collins and Trish Clarke lost 5 and 4, and Jenny Cobb and Kathy Horner lost 6 and 5.

Ladies captain, Bridget celebrated her captain’s Day in style on a rare dry and sunny day with a good turnout from the club’s ladies.

Newly crowned Leicestershire girls champ, Imogen collected a stack of prizes for the best Stableford score of 36 points, nearest pin on the 17th and nearest pin second shot on the 12th. Michelle Powell was second on countback with 36 points, Trish Clarke third on 34s.

Despite having claimed she played badly, Ann Shuttleworth also took three prizes – first in the putting competition with 31 putts (just pipping Jenny Cobb on countback), then for the best front nine (20 points), and nearest the pin on the 13th.

Pat Wright nailed her tee shot on the 4th for another nearest pin. Carole Westcott shot 19 pts for the best back nine.

l DESPITE personally losing 2 and 1 with Martyn Gatehouse, and the team only claiming a half point in their first three games at Greetham Valley, Dave Rippin’s B team posted an impressive 3½-2½ victory.

The last three games were won 2 and 1 by Chris Palmer and Mike Powell, 2 and 1 by Jordan Paylor and Phil Drury, and an impressive 5 and 4 win from Pete Siciliano and Kev Moxham. Andy Vernon and Josh Paylor halved, Deggie Palmer and Gerry McIntyre lost 2 and 1.

Remarkably the story was the same with the C team’s home game against Oundle – another 3½-2½ scoreline secured by three wins in the final three games.

Results: Kev Moxham and Alan Shuttleworth won 4 and 3, Barry Cheshire and Gerry McIntyre won 2 and 1, Ian Dimbleby and Martyn Gatehouse won 6 and 5, Chris Palmer and Steve Lowe lost 2 and 1, Jordan Paylor and Phil Drury halved, David Whitehouse and Dave Rippin lost 1 down.
