Vale fighters on track to become black belts

Fourteen members of Vale Judo Club passed a black belt theory course at the Oakham-based club recently.

It is one of the few clubs in the East Midlands with a large enough matted training area to host the Dan grade course which was led by two 6th Dan BJA tutors, including Atlanta Olympian Steve Gawthorpe.

Vale coach Mike Newton said: “Most are now in the final stages of gaining their first, second or third Dan black belt grades.”

A total of 21 delegates took part. The Vale fighters who passed the course and assessment were: Joe Munford, David Broomfield, Isaac Broomfield, Alec Newton, Noel Blake, Richard Allen, Ben Allen, Richard Lawrence, Derek Haughton, Louise Newton, Holly Newton, Lucy Fleet and Carys Newton.

Most of the group assessed recently began at the Oakham club. For details see
