Vets end on a high

OAKHAM Tennis Club’s ladies Vets have ended their summer season in the Leicestershire League with a clean sweep of victories in their last three matches.

The remaining matches are unlikely to affect Oakham’s fourth place position, which would represent a superb finish for Oakham in a competitive top flight. The clubs above them are three of the largest in the league - Leicester Forest East, Oadby and Charnwood.

Oakham won 6-2 at Wigston where Pauline Pitts returned to the competitive circuit after a few years away from the game. She and Laura Reekie worked hard against the hosts’ first pair to no avail but did produce the goods against their second pair.

Debbie Powell and skipper Jane Wood beat both pairs convincingly on a day when the wind played a considerable role.

Pauline then played with Jane Gilmore at The Vale against a strong Victoria team. The pair got a valuable point against the seconds while Debbie Powell and Jackie Staines had to use all their expertise to win both rubbers for a 5-3 win.

The match, against David Lloyd’s team went Oakham’s way as Jane Wood and Carolyn Davies won one tie-break and lost a second. Pauline Pitts and Laura Reekie found the visitors firsts too strong but dispatched the seconds for a 5-3 victory.
