AUSTRIAN rider Zak Dempster won yesterday’s Rutland-Melton CiCLE classic by the narrowest of margins, pulling ahead on the final straight.
Dempster, riding for the Rapha Condor Sharp team, led a pack of 18 riders across the line in 4 hours, 9 minutes and 56 seconds to clock an average speed of just over 25mph for the 105 mile race.
Of the 172 cyclists to start the race, only 90 completed the course, which began in Oakham and took in two laps of Rutland Water and a hill-section through Somerby and Owston before a sprint to the line in Melton.
Two Oakham riders were among the cyclists who represented more then 30 countries in Britain’s biggest one-day cycle race.
James Cambridge finished 61st while Ryan Henry was one of many riders to foul of the tough course and did not finish.
