Oakham School teacher Ellie Watton has featured in England women’s hockey team’s winning start in the Commonwealth Games.

England beat Wales 2-0 on Thursday after goals from Alex Danson in the first half and Nicola White in the second half earned a hard-fought victory in Pool B.

Watton and England won in front of The Queen who was watching from the stands.

The teacher, who has just recently taken up a full time contract with England, was named in the starting line-up for the opening game.

England came into the tournament with mixed form. They recently went unbeaten to win their warm-up event, The Investec London Cup, but had a terrible campaign at the World Cup earlier this year.

Pool B rivals Australia beat Malaysia 4-0 earlier in the day.

England play Malaysia on Sunday (11am), before taking on Australia on Monday (2pm) and Scotland on Wednesday (9am).
