Greetham Valley Golf Club
WEEK ten of the Greetham Valley winter order of merit got under way in superb conditions on Sunday.
The new year brought a new winner on the Lakes course with club captain, Jim Wheeler topping the leaderboard with an impressive score of 41 points.Jim also scored 50 points in the order of merit table which lifts him from 31st to 17th place.
Following up his win in the one-off Christmas special, former club captain John Sparks, playing off 12, had a brilliant front nine scoring 23. However two silly mistakes cost him dearly on the back nine, where he scored only 18 and had to be content with second place on countback.
On the 15th he fluffed his chip onto the green, and went out of bounds on the 18th. Despite these slips he moves from 28th to 18th in the table.
Long time leader Bob Beverley had another steady round and came in with 39 points to take third place.
Bob said he is concentrating on steady golf and is not going for any “miracle” shots, and his approach seems to be paying off.
Second team player Adam Clegg and second team captain Alan Bennett both scored 38 but Adam took fourth on countback.
The top four in the order of merit remain the same but Beverley has extended his score to 195.5, and he is now 20 points ahead of order of merit organiser Neil Harris on 175.
Dave Copley slipped back to 153.2 but still remains ahead of Steff Dutton, who is in fourth with 134.8 points.
The leaders are looking over their shoulders at Adam Clegg on 129.5, he has jumped up from tenth place to fifth and is improving week by week.
