THIS weekend could be the biggest of the year so far for Bourne rider Ali Slater.
Tomorrow he races the National Junior 10-mile time trial championship and having finished fourth at the corresponding race last year, as a first year junior, Slater, who will be representing Bourne Wheelers, will be hoping for a top three finish.
The following day, Slater will be joined on the start line at Loughborough by Mark Botteley and Matt Passenger for the 80 mile regional road race championship.
For this race he ride under the colours of his trade team, Hargroves Cycles, while Mark and Matt will fly the flag for the Wheelers.
This week also marks the beginning of the annual inter-club Hereward League.
l THE Bourne club has dominated the event for the last four years, with three individual wins and four riders in the top ten last year, and they will aim to once again be near the top. Peterborough Cycling Club host the first race in the series.
l AFTER two weeks of activity from the Bourne Bullets - the Wheelrs’ youth section - Adam Botteley is the early leader in the season-long points competition, just ahead of Tim James, Saskia Hunt and Harry Cole.
The two sessions to date have seen an increase in numbers from previous years with 30 riders taking part on Monday evenings and anyone between the ages of six and 14 is welcome to try out cycling in a safe environment with qualified coaches.
The club meets at Recreation Road from 6-7pm.
